Beat the January blues for next to nothing

January can be a dark month for many families. The festive shift is called the ‘January blues’ for a good reason. We all over-indulge, over-spend and go the extra mile over the holiday season, and although the New Year is supposed to be a time of new beginnings and resolutions, by January, we are often left out of pocket and out of energy.

To combat this seasonal ailment we have compiled a fun filled list of free activities that are a stone’s throw from the CBD.  Say goodbye to boring weekends! Say hello to great activities that you and your family are bound to love. Drum roll please…

Have a full day free on your calendar? Go for a local walk. Hiking in the great outdoors is proven to be of phonemical help to those suffering from lethargy and depression.  

  • Werribee Gorge is a fantastic location and is only an hour’s drive from Melbourne CBD. With a post hike swimming hole, wonderful views and optional rock scrambling, this moderate to high level walk provides a great opportunity to work off all of those mince pies. The full circuit is a 4 hour hike with several optional detours for the dedicated rambler.
  • The Dandenong Ranges are also a great option for city dwellers with little ones or limited time. A great option within the Ranges would be The Eastern Sherbrooke Forest Walk. Also just an hour’s drive from the CBD, the walk consists of wide walkways that are suitable for pushchairs. Pass through vegetable beds that have been growing since World War II, along with wombats, swamp wallaby, echidna and possums.
  • If you prefer to jog rather than hike, The Tan, (officially termed the Tan Track) is a great urban option. The gravel and sandy paths are encircled by the cities lush Botanical Gardens within South Yarra. With a 3.8km stretch, you are bound to boost your brains Serotonin and Vitamin D.

  • Who doesn’t love free art? The Koorie Heritage Trust in Federation Square celebrates Indigenous Art and Culture in the South Eastern Region of Australia. With 3 galleries of art, and optional walking tours within the city, you are bound to discover more of Australia’s beautiful history. Operating on a donation only scheme, the Trust ensures this incredible art is accessible for all.
  • Victoria’s Parliament House also offers free tours, and you don’t have to be an avid political follower to enjoy what the tour has to offer. With great inside information on local architecture, The Royal Family and the ability to take as many photos as you want, the tour is a great educational tool for both young and old alike.
  • Don’t want to fork out for the cinema? Watch a multitude of movies and TV shows for free, in various cosy self-contained booths in the ACMI (The Australian Centre for the Moving Image). Become immersed in free film, television and movie culture with the free permanent exhibit, Screen Worlds.
